“Ah, thank you, Miss Bunsen!” the voice interrupted. “So not only are you aware of the book, but you have now given me its exact location.”

The image on the wall flickered again and switched to a shot of a safe in Miss Bunsen’s attic office.

“Oh, no—look!” Halinka pointed to the corner of the basement, where the hourglass had appeared again and was slowly losing sand from its top half.

“The code, please, Miss Bunsen. I haven’t got all day,” said the voice. Miss Bunsen looked at her girls, their expressions frightened in the candlelight.

“The code you need is…”

“No, Miss Bunsen!” Halinka jumped up in front of her teacher. “Don’t give in! We can get out of here ourselves.”

“Yes,” Pearl added. “We’re Bunseners, remember?”

“Wait a minute,” said Millie. “Are we going to be stuck in this horrible basement forever? At least if they get the book, we can all just go back to school.”

“Millie!” Halinka shrieked. “Don’t you care that the Tome could be dangerous in the wrong hands? And that it’s been in our school for centuries?”

“I’m just being practical. Even if the book is important, is it more important than all of us and our well-being?” Her voice got quieter. “I want to get out of here.”

“Time’s nearly up!” the voice sneered.
